Public exposure for top award show

Sundays will never be the same again now that the annual Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards ceremony has been turned into a glitzy black-tie function with top-flight entertainment - and the public can attend.

Beginning at the Baxter at 6pm on Sunday, the function will resonate with nominees for the 14 award categories as well as a strong representation from other members of the arts and entertainment community: actors, singers, dancers, drama lecturers, musicians and the like.

Top Billing's Jo-Ann Strauss will be the MC, and heading the entertainment will be the Afro-jazz group, Freshlygound, and Munthir Dullisear and the cast of Ghoema, the David Kramer-Taliep Pietersen musical, will perform Rosa, a hot number from the show (which is returning to the Baxter in June).

Also in Sunday's lineup will be opera diva Pauline Malefane and popular muso Chris Chameleon, who will perform items from his album, Ek herhaal jou.

Hip-hop poetess Lebo Mashile is also on the bill. After the show Los Gitanos, a leading South African Latin band, will play in the foyer.

The format of the Fleur du Cap ceremony began to change last year when it was held in Pieter Toerien's Theatre on the Bay. That too was a black-tie affair, but though the ceremony was generally praised, the after-party was not.

Too, there were those who missed the conviviality of the old format, which was a lunch served in the course of the awards ceremony, followed by relaxed socialising during which the gossip flowed with the drink.

This year the awards are taking place in a much larger venue with a function theatregoers and celebrity-spotters can attend.

Tickets are R150 and can be booked through Computicket. This includes the awards ceremony, the show, wine and snacks.

Proceeds will go towards development of theatre in the Western Cape.
